Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Gary, IN
Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod / by Delwyn X. Campbell / 49 views
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Gary, IN, was established in 1945 by the Calumet Mission Association after John and Ruby McDowell sought admission into Trinity Lutheran Church in the Emerson neighborhood district. It is the indirect fruit of the work in Alabama of Dr. Rosa J. Young and Rev. Nils Bakke of the Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference. Good Shepherd was planted in Midtown neighborhood district across from Theodore Roosevelt High School. At that time, any Negro who moved to Gary ended up living in Midtown. Thus, the leadership of Trinity reasoned that it would be better for all concerned to plant a congregation that was closer to where (they expected,) the McDowell family lived. Good Shepherd has served the community in Word and Sacrament faithfully since that then, across the street from the school that educated black leaders, educators, and entertainment stars.
The congregation is currently cared for by the Rev. Delwyn X Campbell. He is an LCMS Mission Field: USA National Missionary (lcms.org/Campbell). The congregation makes use of The Lutheran Hymnal and Lead Me Guide Me for its hymns, and Lutheran Worship for its liturgical worship.
